Ulcerative colitis is one of the disease processes in inflammatory bowel disease. This typically affects mainly the colon and rectum. The disease process is mostly limited to the inner lining of the bowel wall and results in ulcerations and subsequent bleeding. Bloody diarrhea, fever, abdominal pain and weight loss are common with this condition. Our gastroenterology colleagues manage this disease process with several anti-inflammatory medications. Surgery is reserved for patients who fail medical management; patients with worsening disease; or patients who cannot tolerate medical management. Also some patients with longstanding disease who are at risk for developing cancer of the colon or patients with biopsies that show precancerous lesions will likely require surgical removal of the colon. A comprehensive workup and discussion of surgical options are reviewed before any procedures are undertaken. Dr. Ambe works closely with his gastroenterology colleagues to ensure optimal timing for surgery.
